Special Program:

Caring for God’s Creation

On Sunday, February 12, Pat Watkins, Director of Caring for God’s Creation, will be at TBUMC to present a special program-during Sunday school- about how we can better take care of and heal God’s creation.  He will also provide the message for the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on February 12 while Pastor Joe is away.

Pat is an ordained minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, having served churches in the Lynchburg District.  He and his wife, Denise Honeycutt, served as missionaries in Nigeria with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.

He currently serves as a Church and Community Worker (missionary inside the U.S.) for the UMC as “Executive Director of Caretakers of God’s Creation,” a Virginia Conference creation care ministry team.  This is the first time the General Board of Global Ministries has appointed a missionary to a ministry to God’s creation.

He is a member of the UM Women’s Division Green Team for the denomination.  Pat tries to live out his passion for God’s creation by living his life in such a way as to make a smaller footprint on God’s earth.  He is an avid organic, permaculture gardener.  His passion is to raise the awareness, particularly among people of faith, that there is a connection between faith and a responsibility to care for and heal God’s creation.  He and Denise live in Richmond.

Over the last four years, Caretakers has introduced “The Green Church Initiative” to the conference.  An official conference-approved ministry, the Green Church Initiative challenges local congregations to begin to consider God’s creation in the areas of worship, discipleship, evangelism, mission, and stewardship.  In other words, The Green Church Initiative is an instrument through which the entire life and ministry of a local congregation can be involved in a ministry to God’s creation.  To date, there are several churches that have completed the requirements of the GCI and many more are busy implementing it in their congregation.

Women's Bible Study

Mark your calendar for this Beth Moore Bible Study to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m., following the prayer meeting

Stepping Up:

A Journey through the Psalms of Ascent is a 7-session study.

Join Beth in a journey that explores Psalms 120:134. As you examine these 15 Psalms essential to worship and praise in Old Testament times you will come to a place of greater intimacy with God who delights in hearing not only our praise, but our petitions as well.  Explore the major feasts of Israel and journey with Beth through Psalms 120-134. Themes such as unity, joy and gratitude, redemption, repentance, the power of blessings, facing ridicule, and more are explored in detail. Modern-day believers can learn much from these treasured Psalms in their journey toward greater intimacy with God.

Questions see Elizabeth Davis (465-8403) or  edavis@shentel.net.
